8 ways to say ‘welcome to your new home’

There are a myriad of reasons people move home, maybe they’re setting up for the first time, maybe they’re downsizing after the kids have flown the nest, maybe they’re looking to move to the countryside, a new town, different schools, for work…? But, as we support our friends, family and even clients through this huge life change, what house warming gifts can we treat them to that say ‘welcome to your new home?’

As, a Leicestershire based mum of tweens and small business owner, my opinions are going to reflect this, you may have your own suggestions and I’d love to hear them. I’ve not been paid, nor do I receive any benefit for the links I’m recommending, they’re just other local small businesses that I admire.

Susie brings a wealth of knowledge to her business Windowsill Plants. If your housewarming gift idea is for a gorgeous low maintenance plant, pop in and see her for the best pick.

Whenever you support local people, you’re supporting both your local community and economy. We have so much local talent and enthusiasm in Leicestershire, it’s almost easier to support us!

  1. A bottle of something celebratory!

Because moving house is a HUGE deal, one of the most stressful things you can do in life is move house, and once you’re in, it doesn’t ease straight away, you can have new home blues, instant ‘I’ve taken on too much of a project’ regret, settling issues. I’m not suggesting a bottle of plonk will take all that away, but it’s a good reminder that it’s still a reason to celebrate and happiness lies ahead. Duncan Murray is your man, find him on Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough to choose the perfect bottle.

  2. Food

You could gift them a voucher for a local pub. They don’t need to worry about finding cutlery amongst the boxes before eating, and they can get to know their local community at the same time. The Sun Inn in Great Easton has a superbly priced community lunch on a Monday, I’d definitely recommend popping there. Or how about an Award Winning Brockleby’s Pie? They’ll need their own cutlery, but so thoughtful to gift a tasty and easy dinner.

  3. A foolhardy plant

Low maintenance, easy care, all good words to describe the perfect house warming plant. It can be used to hide a corner that needs decorating, and they’re known to relieve stress and of course ‘purify the air’. Susie at Windowsill Plants on Abbey Street in Market Harborough, has a plethora of knowledge and a gorgeous shop full of house plants.

  4. The gift of service

Oh so cheesy, but is the garden overgrown? Do they need a hand moving the dining table? Painting? Watching the kids while bedrooms are sorted? We could all do with a hand sometimes, offer yours.

  5. Wax melts and a burner

A beautifully scented, safe for pets and kids, wax melt and burner. Pretty both lit and unlit, making at least one area of the house look, smell and feel calm. Check out the lovely Dragonfly & Co, available at SSnug Living on Abbey Street, in Market Harborough.

  6. A hamper of locally sourced goodies, like fudge(!)

Your hamper could also include jam, pickles, cheese & biscuits, hand cooked crisps… with a hamper you can personalise every last detail to the person or family you are buying for, and it shows so much thought and care. And, whether they are moving by themselves, or have help from family or the movers, everyone needs a snack or a sugary pick me up. Mhudge is absolutely the perfect moving day treat though!

  7. A bouquet of freshly cut flowers

Just remember to pop them in a jam jar vase unless you know they’ve settled in already! Flowers are always beautiful, brighten up any space and are instantly cheerful. I’d recommend popping to Weltons Deli in Great Bowden on a Friday to pick up The Tiny Flower Patch’s friday flowers, Nicky’s flowers are seasonal, locally grown and stunning.

  8. And lastly, something for the garden

Moving to Leicestershire, maybe they have more outside space than they’ve had before. Both the Plant Man and Langton Greenhouse have a fantastic selection of garden plants, tools and pots to really change an outdoor space.
